A very fine and rare mid 19th century cedar and huon pine apprentice made bookcase in outstanding original condition.
The cornice faced with a geometric frieze in cedar and huon above glazed and paneled doors with acanthus carving. The lower section also has an alternating cedar and huon  crossbanded frieze above an ogee shaped single drawer with huon stringing and flanked by birds eye huon capitals above carved corbels. The doors have raised sheild panels with carved finials above a plinth base.
The interior and back is huon, the shelving is cedar.
The size of the bookcase at approximately 2:3 scale indicates it was made by a finishing apprentice displaying the extent of his talent.
The quality of cabinet work is high and the finish is original with only a few minor repairs evident.
A very pleasing and substantial Tasmanian artifact.

Dimensions: 850mm wide x 1585mm x 320mm
