An exceptionally good large Australian cedar chest from the pre-Victorian era, in original condition and featuring two important stylistic enhancements that lift it from good to beyond: Crossbanding to the top, drawer dividers and sides. Secondly, the central top drawer features an diamond shaped ebonised escutcheon with a framed crossbanded frieze with recessed ebonised mouldings.
The well figured cedar has been placed thoughtfully by the maker with a continuation of grain across the top drawers.
Interior and back is also cedar, and the carcass sits on top of boldly turned feet.
Cedar chests from this period are rare. It is rarer still to find one in such glorious original condition.
Dimensions: 1220mm long x 1385mm high x 575mm deep.
